Wanting to fly is a kid’s life dream we all have had. This is now possible on the Island just from Las Criollas Beach in the municipality of Barceloneta where you can embark on an open flight, through a venture known as hangliding.
Hangliding is a glider that can be transported, elevated and landed with only the use of the pilot’s legs, as defined by the International Aeronautic Federation in its Sport Code. It can be initiated standing up, from a mountain or hill, or with the help of ground towing mechanical equipment (towed by another aircraft).
The last is the one being practiced on the island; through four basic steps you are flying and experiencing the utmost satisfaction of being a bird for a day. World competitions are held for the followers of this recognized extreme sport. The first championships of the world took place in Austria in 1976.
In Puerto Rico, Roberto Mojica, a certified instructor by the United States Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association (USHPA) has more than 20 years of experience in this sport and has represented the Island in various world events. It’s not easy to explain what you will feel; much less the experience. Maybe the best way to do it is to live it on your Island. This adventure was made possible thanks to the operator of Aventuras Borincanas. For more details call 787-318-3473 or on go to Facebook.
